which peel is right for you?
Smoother, younger skin
A chemical peel at Alexa Mar Wellness Retreat is a skin-care treatment applied to the neck, hands, or face. Most people get a chemical peel to enhance their skin’s appearance and improve texture. During a peel, chemical solutions are applied to the site of treatment. The solution triggers both exfoliation and rejuvenation in the skin. Once the outer layer of skin peels off, the new skin beneath is smoother, less wrinkled, and less blemished.
Benefits of chemical peel
Chemical peels are used to treat a large number of skin conditions or blemishes. Chemical peels are excellent for treating:
wrinkles and fine lines
uneven skin tone or redness
What type of chemical peel can I get?
Three broad categories of chemical peels are available from Alexa MedSpa, These are:
Superficial peels, which use mild acids like alpha-hydroxy acid to gently remove the outermost layer of skin but penetrates no deeper than that.
Medium peels, which involve trichloroacetic or glycolic acid, pass through the outer layer and affect the middle skin layer. Medium peels are able to target some issues that result from damaged skin cells.
Deep peels, which penetrate enough to affect the entire middle layer of skin, rely on phenol or trichloroacetic acid to attempt to remove deep blemishes by clearing away damaged skin cells.
How long does a chemical peel last?
The results of chemical peels can last anywhere from one month to the rest of your life. The longevity of a chemical peel's results depends on several factors, but the most significant factor is the strength of the peel. A light, or superficial, peel produces results that usually last between one and two months.
After a chemical peel, skin is temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so wear sunscreen every day. It should say "broad-spectrum" on the label, meaning it protects against the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Also, it should be a physical sunscreen and be above SPF 30. Limit your time in the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and wear a wide-brimmed hat
Things to Avoid:
For all peels, you will also need to avoid certain skin treatments, medications, and sun exposure to prepare your skin for the peel.
There are certain skin treatments you should avoid before having your peel completed. You want to wait at least two weeks since your last chemical peel or microdermabrasion treatment before having this treatment completed. This will help to avoid over-exfoliation and subsequent irritation of your skin.
You should avoid tanning for two to three weeks before the treatment. This includes using tanning booths because exposure to artificial UV radiation can damage the skin significantly.
Finally, you want to avoid using chemical hair removal treatments or waxing your skin at least five to seven days before treatment. You also want to avoid any chemical injection treatments like collagen injections and Botox for at least a week before the peel.
There are some medications that can interact with the acids used in chemical peels, so your dermatologist may request that you stop taking them for a period of time before treatment. These are most commonly photosynthesizing drugs, which increase sensitivity to sunlight and may cause inflammation of the skin after exposure to sunlight. These medications include:
Certain contraceptives (female sex hormones or birth control pills)
NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
Coal tar/coal tar derivatives
Oral diabetes medications (sulfonylureas)
Water pills (thiazide diuretics)
Another important medication to avoid is the acne medication Accutane, also known by the generic names Claravis, Amnesteem, and others. If you have used these medications in the past six months, you will need to let your doctor know and postpone your treatment.
One major concern before you get a peel is exposure to sunlight. Sometimes exposure to the sun cannot be avoided because of work or family life, but you should try to avoid sun exposure at least ten days before treatment. If you do expose yourself to the sun for any amount of time within that period, make sure you apply plenty of sunscreen and limit your time outside as much as you can.
